I spent the entire day yesterday surfing the Web for a solution. Sony's website claims the HDR-FX1 ( a $3k High Definition Video camera) should work with the drivers included in Windows 7. I have Windows 7 Professional. There is no response from the system when I connect the FX1 to a Firewire port and the video software (Sony Vegas 9) can't see the device. Also, the camera does not show up in the Device Manager.
I am not a novice user. Also, I have two FX1s and neither works under Windows 7. Both worked under Windows XP with Sony Vegas 9.

I read Microsoft's white paper on the switch to IEEE1394b. That paper implies, but does not state absolutely, that the 'legacy' IEEE1394 driver in Windows 7 is the same as the driver that was in Windows XP. From the problem I am experiencing it appears the two drivers are not completely equivalent.

Is your tape HDV or just DV? If the camera displays DV in, you have your camera set to play standard DV footage, or downconvert HDV footage. If that's what you want, then you'll need to use one of the DV Easy Setups in FCP.
The important thing to do first, though, is turn all your equipment off. Camera, computer, all.
Make sure the camera is connected to the computer via FireWire first, then turn it on and load your tape.
Now turn on the Mac, and launch FCP. Close any previous projects that may have opened.
Now choose the proper Easy Setup from the FCP menu. This will depend on whether you are NTSC or PAL, and if you have HDV or DV footage.
NOTE: If you have HDV footage, you'll need to make sure the camera is set to play out HDV, and choose an HDV 1080 setup.
Next, open a new untitled project, and open the log and capture window.
Now, your camera should be recognized, and you should be able to control it from the keyboard, and begin to capture.
